A Public Comment Period Opportunity – Accreditation Requirements for Forensic Science Testing and Calibration Laboratories The comment period closes December 9, 2016
As a part of ANAB’s ongoing efforts to provide customers with relevant and timely program documents, we have revised the accreditation requirements for ASCLD/LAB’s Forensic Science Testing Program and Forensic Science Calibration Program (formerly known as supplemental requirements) and ANAB’s Accreditation for Forensic Testing Laboratories.
Two documents are being provided for comments, the forensic science testing accreditation program and the forensic science calibration accreditation program:
- Proposed ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO/IEC 17025-Forensic Science Testing Laboratories Accreditation Requirements
- Proposed ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO/IEC 17025-Forensic Science Calibration Laboratories Accreditation Requirements
While the accreditation requirements documents are separate, the numbering of clauses between the two documents has been harmonized. This harmonization should assist quality systems that are preparing for, or currently hold, accreditation in both programs. If a requirement is applicable to both the forensic testing and forensic calibration programs, it will have the same number in both documents. If the requirement is applicable to only one program, each will have a unique accreditation requirement number. Additionally, language encompassed previously in ANAB and ASCLD/LAB policies has been included in the accreditation requirements. Customers will find that the accreditation requirements have been revised to provide greater operational flexibility. Requirements are focused on minimum expectations (e.g., the what, not the how), electronic and paperless documentation systems, and harmonized requirements across all forensic science disciplines.
ANAB’s accreditation requirements specific to horseracing laboratories will become a separate document, the ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO-IEC 17025:2005 Horseracing Laboratories Technical Requirements.
Current Accreditation Requirements and Policies
For ease of reference, current documents may be found here:
Forensic Science Testing Laboratories
The proposed ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO/IEC 17025-Forensic Science Testing Laboratories Accreditation Requirements include revisions based upon suggestions from our working group and harmonization of the ANAB and ASCLD/LAB program documents. Many ANAB and ASCLD/LAB requirements have been carried over, but customers are encouraged to read the accreditation requirements document as a new document. To aid the reader in comparing current and proposed requirements, crosswalks for ANAB forensic science testing customers and ASCLD/LAB forensic science testing customers have been prepared:
- Crosswalk for the 2011 ASCLD/LAB Testing Supplemental Requirements and proposed 2017 ANAB-ASCLD/LAB Forensic Science Testing Laboratories Accreditation Requirements
- Crosswalk for ANAB MA3011 Accreditation Requirements and proposed 2017 ANAB-ASCLD/LAB Forensic Science Testing Laboratories Accreditation Requirements
Forensic Science Calibration Laboratories
The proposed ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO/IEC 17025-Forensic Science Calibration Laboratories Accreditation Requirements contains revisions to the current supplemental requirements to harmonize with the proposed ANAB-ASCLD/LAB ISO/IEC 17025-Forensic Science Testing Laboratories Accreditation Requirements document. Many ASCLD/LAB requirements have been carried over, but customers are encouraged to read the accreditation requirements document as a new document. To aid the reader in comparing current and proposed requirements, a crosswalk has been prepared:
- Crosswalk for the 2016 ASCLD/LAB Calibration-Measuring Instruments Supplemental Requirements and proposed 2017 ANAB-ASCLD/LAB Forensic Science Calibration Laboratories Accreditation Requirements
Accreditation Requirements Surveys
Constructive comments will be collected using Survey Monkey. Independent surveys are provided for the proposed testing and calibration accreditation requirements:
- Survey for Forensic Science Testing Accreditation Requirements
- Survey for Forensic Science Calibration Accreditation Requirements
Customers and interested parties are encouraged to review both documents and provide comments that refer to a specific clause number. Clearly stating a specific concern, and including a suggested change to effectively address the concern provides the greatest value. We appreciate the time taken to review the proposed requirements and provide comments. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in the ANAB-ASCLD/LAB document development process.
Additional program updates including implementation dates will be provided in separate communication.
